i feel like ass
and moradin isnt my god. I pray to Lady Truesilver!

“I know.” And I laugh briefly and start to tear up.
“Durawin. He... he didn’t make it.”
“And it looks like we have a scaly one we saved from within the beast as well.”

“Ramza? Bongo? Xav... xavavor?”
“You guys okay?”

Well that was... interesting

“Bongo?”
I try to wash where the acid hit me

Oh, before I forget, 450 xp total - so 90 each...

“Who had the bag of holding?”

me

“Gumbar... we have to get out of here.”
“We’re going to have to take Durawin with us... in the bag.”
“Maybe we can get a cleric to help?”
“Or...
“Well, get him his final resting place.”

How did this dragonborn get here
I don't trust it

I break away from the group a bit, struggling to keep my curses quiet. "Damn you bard, it was supposed to be a simple job! Just a simple job..."

“Gumbar Im hurt. Are you going to make it?”
“We need to rest a bit.”
I go check Durawins body. And get it prepped to fit in the sack as well.

No removing limbs to stuff him in
anyone need a Cure Wounds spell at this time?

“Gumbar and whatever mr. Scales is likely need it more than me.”

who's hurt the worst?

Rough.
Take a short rest and recover some hit dice?

We're on the clock. And we're risking more company the longer we stay put. This day has extracted a heavy toll as is

Short rest is an hour. Gumbar is hurt... and we are down one spellcaster.
And this scaled thing we need to talk to
It’s not looking too good either

need another hit? err, heal?
single or double?

Check the scaly dragon born

Bongo checks out the scaly guy.

I blink my eyes several times, adjusting to the darkness and wiping away the leftover goo. I make eye contact with any of those looking my way, and try to get a sense of what exactly has happened here. I look down to the ground and see my greataxe. I reach quickly to grab it. And back against the wall (I-10)
"Who are you people? What happened here? Am I still under the city?"

“Whoaaaa. Easy. Easy there...”
“No one has reason to hurt you right now. You were swallowed by some sort of horrible creature. You are lucky to be alive right now.” I say as I’m getting Durawin’s body ready for the bag.

you are able to just barely get Durawin's body into the bag - the opening is only 2' in diameter, so anyone bigger than a scrawny bard probably wouldn't fit

Hey! Show some respect for the dead!

We are.
I’m loading your body into the bag instead of leaving it to rot in the hall.

(Only because it’s practical in this moment)

I dunno- I have this vision of Ramza trying to shove my torso in, muttering under his breath "Come-- ON- you- scrawny-- little -- BARD!!"

I’ve tied you up mummy style using your clothes and any rope on you.

I'm just so sad okay

I look at the remains of the acidic goo all over. I see the creature being...placed...into the bag.
"What happened to him?"

“He wasn’t as lucky as you.” I say quietly. “Are you okay? Where are you hurt?”
“What are you doing down here?”

that chick at the bar didnt say anything about a dragon dude...

"No one in the city would know I am down here. I had sought a quiet entrance, without the trouble of questioning guards at the gates."
"For whatever it is worth... thanks to you, I am alive, though somewhat the worse for wear."

“Which way are you headed?”
“And what’s your name? I am Octavious.”

Greetings Octavius. I am Kalochex, a warrior and emmissary of Clan Stormborn. A mountain of fire that is usually contained burst some time ago, and my village was scorched. My people survived, only barely. We sent out warriors to find out why the magic in and around our village is failing. I seek the knowledge that may be within the city.

“We’re on the same path. But first we have to complete this job and get out of here alive. You’re welcome to come with us and we can discuss more about it after we are out of here.”
“You in?”

"Welcome Kalochex. "
I look up, and up at the newcomer

I take a moment more to inspect each of the members of the party.
"I shall welcome your help, at least until I am out of this sewer"
"I got lost trying to find a proper exit inside the city, and came upon the gelatinous aberration. While I managed to hit it a couple times, it consumed me. I shall be happy to accompany you... What is your purpose in the sewer?"

“Just getting to the other side.” Octavious says.

who had the chest?

Gumbar in the bag of holding

ok cool
so you're saying it was inside the cube of acid

(j/k, bag of holding, as a magical item, has a basic inherent resistance to damage)
just let me know when y'all are ready to press on

Ready

I'm here. Until I'm not

as you take a few minutes to catch your breath after the fateful combat, and especially with the new arrival backing up to where he did, you all now see the dark outline of a massive, rusty grate that covers the entire width of the tunnel

we walk up and examine the gate. Is there a lock?

make an investigation check please

@Ramza the first thing you notice is it is a grate, not a gate

no door

one of you really strong guys want to lift that grate?

but you can tell that the iron bars, while thick, are very rusty, and the bars on the "top" (right-hand side from your perspective) seem to be nearly eaten through. probably by the repeated movements of some acidic creature.

Directions said through the grate, but it's barred up? That's rude. Anyway, does it look like I could force passage? Is it big enough for us all to fit through?

smash the rusty sections to break open a hole to get thru?

@Ramza the bars are roughly 12" apart - you imagine the folks who usually do this "run" squeeze through maybe? your party has some big folks though....
(edited)
you can definitely try to force your way through a weak section

I'll try (halfling)

I'd suggest using xav's magic to blast it like he did the rocks on the river, but we'd probably draw the attention of everything down here. I can also try to just snap or kick the rusted sections enough to make room

any particular section you'd like to try?

a weak section, on the right hand side

how would you like to try to break the weak bars?

We could throw you at the bars Bongo

I don't weigh much

Or you know, kick them

grab and yank

We can try that first

ok, make an athletics check first to try and climb up the side (the weak bars are on the elevate platform roughly 5' above the channel you are currently in)

as you get up on the walkway, you take a moment to investigate the bars in the dim light (I assume Octavious has come over with his torch - your main source of light was Durawin's spell...)
you see one bar that looks a bit weaker than the others, stick your greataxe at the bottom of the bar, and try it pry it loose. the bar creaks, and there is a bit of movement, but it is still holding.

"Anyone else have a piece of metal or wood to assist here?

the bar bends slightly, allowing the three of you to grip it and pull it back until it pops out of the grate. there is now an opening large enough for all of you to pass.

"Shall we?"

Go go go

I nod
"Excuse me, but which one of you exactly knows where you are going?"

Not me.

"I'm sure you can understand I am not interesting in getting lost... again."

"We do." I gesture to octavious and myself as I move to stay ahead of the others.

"Ah. good. And what exactly is on the other side of this sewer for you?"
(I say all this somewhat quietly, just loud enough for the group to hear, cautious of more jelly traps)

"A paycheck and a favor."

ah, very well

looks like stairs ahead

as the party passes through the now-broken grate, you see a passageway to the right, and stairs leading up directly ahead
across the channel (at this point full of foul-smelling greenish-brown liquid) you see stairs leading up as well

we should look up the passageway to the right

Is said right passageway wide?

it is maybe 8' wide

what can we see down the passageway
?

Going to assume that's the path then. Is it wider than the path we're on now?

@Bongo as you walk ahead a bit and peek around the corner, you see a door
@Ramza the side passageway seems to be roughly the same width as the path you are on now

this sounds like the right place. Do we have a rogue who can check that door?

Yeah, sounds like it. @Octavious is our guy here

i cast mage hand and open the door with it
dont need no sneaky rogue here!
(or at least attempt to i gues)

your spectral hand appears, drifts forward, and the door is indeed unlocked - it opens to reveal a small room with a set of stairs
there is a a platform at the top of the steps, but you can't make out what is at the top

i make a thumbs up with the hand, wave it around in the doorway, and dismiss it

I give a nod of approval. "Up the steps, first door on the left," I whisper as I start moving forward.
Cautiously, too

ditto

you cautiously enter the room, which is now dimly lit by the lantern in Octavious' hand. you see a relatively clean room, with a few empty wooden crates in a corner. up the steps you see three closed doors

I follow behind

as octavious walked down the path the enter the passage, he, gumbar, and kalochex could just see a bridge crossing over the channel before the rogue's hooded lantern swung towards the passageway

is that a short joke????

"There's a channel down that way... just how big are these sewers?"

you were already in the passageway, as were ramza and xavavor
^(to bongo)

\o/

Forward to the passage's opening!

“Wait... three doors.”
Can I get a map update to show what we are looking at?

I think the 4:34pm is the current

“Okay. Next on the directions... ‘You’ll see a door set back from the path. Go through it, then up the steps and through the first door on your left.’ So we need to go through the first door on the left after going up the steps.”

sounds good.

“Anyone disagree? Ramza?”

We already went through said door, we're at the next step @Octavious
Looking for the passageway

thats not what I am reading... as I go through each "waypoint" I make a check. seeing the combat map... shows we have still yet to go through the door.

latest map is indeed accurate - so far no one has gone into the room other than Ramza, and he is just inside the door.

He did whisper to the rest of the party which door to go through. So we all know.

yeah
just waiting for folks to enter the room so I can have the ancient black dragon hiding in the corner reveal himself

... Octavious stays put. LOL
(Kidding)

that's metagaming! you better be the first one into the dragon's mouth I mean room....

So is telling us about the dragon ahead of time!

Looking for traps

(minor retcon) as you walk into the large space you see steps to your right leading down (not up) to the lower level (5' below you). there are a few large metal pipes going straight up, and at the edge of your torchlight you see another large channel you assume is full of water (or something grosser, judging by the smell)

"The good news is, I think we're safe from rolling barrels."

Whew.

@Kalochex you can also see over the barrel now - there is a second, similarly-size barrel behind it, and you think you can see some crates in the darkness behind that one

Men, it seems that there are more barrels and crates behind this one. I take another second to look for anything resembling life

How high is the ceiling above the barrels?

the ceiling is arched, not much higher than the barrels near the wall, but maybe 15' above the barrels in the center of the tunnel
@Kalochex nothing is moving back there, as far as you can tell
there is barely any light though

the room looks almost freakishly clean

I don't see anything

just walk through the room straight

I make my way through, walking to avoid the table and chairs, touching only the floor

kalochex in first, same order? kalochex+ramza in front, oct/gum in middle, bongo/xav in abck?)

I will lead this one
torch out, short sword in the other hand relaxed.
keep walking

ok Oct, step up.
I walk just behind him

(facepalm)

nothing seems odd to you, you are much more focused on walking straight forward and don't even glance around like you normally would
after you pass through the room you come to a set of steps leading down

Keep walking... looking for traps or other items out of place.
till I see a bridge or trouble.

leaving the room behind you continue down the corridor until you see a door maybe 30-35' ahead of you. the door is ajar
@Xavavor nothing seems out of place - there are no books in the room, so you don't really care
@Bongo you don't know what you were expecting, but a perfectly pleasant and clean room in the sewers wasn't in your imagination. nothing attacked though, so

(in fact you are almost a bit disappointed - you were curious but all you saw was stone
)

whatever it was keeping it clean im sure its scary and I dont want to make it angry.

continue down the corridor?

yes.

you get up to the door - it is open just a bit, maybe 2-3"

glance through the crack

glancing through the door you see the corridor continue for another 10-15' before opening up into what appears to be another sewer channel. you can just see the outline of a bridge directly ahead

"bridge is just over 10' ahead on the other side of the door." I whisper back. "We need to cross the bridge."

"just don't cross the streams" I've heard that somewhere

"Hot Crossed Buns...
I heard that somewhere."

Lol wow

going through the door?

I slowly push the door open.

grrrrr

the door creaks a bit and you stop for a moment, but you don't hear anything so you continue opening it more carefully
door is now fully open

quick glance left and right?

whew

as you go past the door and take a look ahead you see the bridge stretching across the channel clearly now. there is a stone pipe to your right, which you imagine leads down through the path to the channel. an unpleasant smell permeates the room - the sewage water in the channel seems to be quite deep here

move forward and to the left. Eyeball the bridge for any issues while everyone else moves forward?

forward over the bridge? or to the left in front of the bridge?

I place a foot on the bridge, testing it's fortitude

seems pretty solid
stone a few feet thick

I start to cross the bridge

make a perception check once you get about halfway across the bridge

To the left in front of the bridge

@Kalochex perception check when you get a second - at disadvantage since the area you are looking is in dim light

oh whoops... that's a 4

bridge seems sound, just looks like more stone in front of you
hard to see much though, area is covered in shadows
does smell pretty awful though
you try not the think what is in the water below you

I’m satisfied I guess

you crossing after him?

Sure

@Kalochex you go the rest of the way across the bridge?

yes I continue across

@Xavavor @Gumbar @Bongo @bagisawesome any particular order over the bridge? y'all have been quiet tonight
@Octavious you can make a perception check if you like
as you cross the bridge

looks clear!
at least this area is back to normal for the sewers - the water below smells awful, looking up at the walls you see grime, there even appears to be a bit of black sludge in the shadows to the right. maybe that is what the smell is coming from.

I stay away from that smell. Ewwww
Probably poop

hey now
everyone poops!

Yeah but most of us don’t smear it onto walls.

so you follow kalochecx across the bridge?

Yes.

Try not to poop on your way across!

that placement cool with everyone?
getting near the end of the trip, I want to make sure I know who is where

Works for me unless y'all would rather I fall back to the rear

“Take a left, go up some steps, into another room. If challenged, show your badges. Kalochek move to the rear.
“

@Gumbar @Bongo @Xavavor all y'all are green, but I haven't heard anything - you good with the current placement?

In good with it

kk

I’m thinking Ramza in lead.

im always green, but im partially busy, so if ramza is around he can control my placement and you can ping me to roll for stuff

k
so ramza up front, kalochex in the back?

That's fine. And I gotchu Gumbar bb

like that?

Beautiful

ok coolsies
@Ramza @Octavious what is your passive investigation?
(edited)

12 for me lol

so a couple things happen at the same time

@Ramza and @Octavious as you are standing next to a large, thick metal pipe, you notice the bottom foot or so seems to be completely corroded away, which is odd
leads to just a hole in the stone floor
@Xavavor while standing on the bridge you hear a noise - as one of the only ones in the party with darkvision you look over to the shadows where Octavious saw the black sludge earlier
the sludge is moving

My passive is 14
13
Sorry 13

@Xavavor as you watch it rises up and begins moving directly towards Gumbar and Bongo
everyone roll initiative (though only Xavavor notices it at this time)
