It was better.. until now

Does magic use seem to be accepted inside this tavern?

One way to find out!

any other conversation now that the party is reunited?

I'm just gonna let em know about this job, and whatnot

Gumbar, what else do we know about this job?
I say quietly while taking in the others in the room.

Ask ramza. Ive been drinking most the time we've been here
I just know we have one at midnight

āAll of us or just yourselves?ā
I glance over to the bartender
āDwarven spirits pleaseā

Barkeep nods, grabs a bottle, and starts pouring. "2 silver for the cup. A gold for the bottle."

I pass a gold and take the cup and the bottle.
Drop 5 silver for the tip and a nod of thanks.

We're making sure a delivery happens- quietly. You can manage that, right?

I do just about everything quietly. Itās what I get hired for.

Any known threats?
Size, weight of the āpackageā?

I saw you fight the Druid. I hope you give refunds

anyway- its smallish. Weight TBD, but we won't let the halfling carry it at any rate

(Looks a Durawinās character with an eyebrow raise)

Desto TBD as well

what are we getting outta this?

Sounds like we were on the losing side of the negotiations for the package.
Hope it pays well.

money and a lead in the Citadel
plus the undying gratitude of The Protectors. whispers whoever they are

Just before midnight, when most of the pubās patrons are gone, the door opens and a woman in a red cloak enters. She speaks with the bartender for a moment, who nods in your direction, before heading over to your table. She opens her satchel and drops a small locked chest on the table. She looks at the six of you, raises her eyebrows, shakes her head a bit, then speaks in a low, quick voice:
āOne block north of here there is an abandoned house with a small courtyard out front. You canāt miss it, it is the only one on this street that sits back from the street. The gate is unlocked. In the courtyard there is a large well ā remove the wooden lid and youāll see steps that lead down.ā
āYou might want a piece of parchment and a pencil for this next bitā¦ā
āAt the bottom of the well youāll see a tunnel. Down the tunnel, left at the first intersection, youāll see a large metal gate. Go through the gate, take a right, through the rusty grate, then get up on the right wide pathway. Youāll see a door set back from the path. Go through it, then up the steps and through the first door on your left. That opens to a long hall ā halfway down there is an opening to the left. Go through it and follow around to the right until you see a bridge crossing the water. Cross the bridge and turn to the right. Whatever you do, do not go straight into the large round room after crossing the bridgeā¦ Follow the path to the right, go up the steps, and go through the door on the left. Ignore whoever or whatever you see in that room, and they will ignore you. Go through the room, down the hall, and cross the bridge at the end of the hall. Take a left, go up some steps, into another room. If challenged, show your badges. Exit the other door, up the steps, and youāll see a ladder. That takes you where you need to go. At the top of the ladder there will be someone waiting for you. Theyāll ask how your trip was, and you will reply that you missed the sun. Give them the chest, and theyāll let you out a side door. Come back tomorrow for your payment.ā
āI havenāt been down in ages, supposedly someone cleared the tunnels out a few weeks ago, but you never know what youāll find down there. Good luck.ā

Thanks
I whisper to Ramza You sure your friend likes you?

āI recommend we put the chest in the bag of holding and be on our way gentlemen?ā

Agreed

Should I scout ahead gents?
I move to scout ahead...
20ā ahead on the streets. Keeping watch for others and minding the rooftops as well

how lit are the streets?

Hand resting on my short sword as I walk.

my wager is: the streets will be fine, but we'll be hit in the tunnels

A stroke of inspiration strikes me, and I realize that while she insisted on staying out of combat, my good friend Rylef is but a short distance away. I curtly whisper that I will return, and go off to try to retrieve her to close the lid behind us.

Ramza heads back to the 'Grave, explains the plan to Rylef, and she agrees to replace the cover after you go down. A few minutes later the two of them quietly enter the courtyard
she brought along some rope from the bar too

Between the two of us we fashion a pulley, and I go down into the well last. Once the rope is set loose again and out of the way, I quietly call out to Rylef to close it behind us. (unless I need to roll for any of this)

That works for me

Is there light?

looks dark

Want to be careful of light tho

I have a hooded lantern. Letās me dial light up and down as needed.
Otherwise itās spells, torches and candles

I do have the light cantrip.
We have enough torches and such- plus the demi-humans

As you get to the bottom of the well, you come out into an open circular room, with a large metal door leading to a curving hallway

forward at a cautious pace

Really quick... I cast prestidigitation on my short sword to create a small light.
Check the door for traps

can you dim that if needed?

It winks out at Will

takes an action to dismiss an effect created by prestidigition, but I'll allow you to have the tip of your sword shine dimly out to 20' or so

I clank quiet

"It seems remarkably grassy for an underground tunnel"

not grass - green brackish water

AH!

so clanking AND splashing

āShhhhhā
I move 10ā ahead of the party

i shape water around each of my steps as to not get wet
wait, are we walking on the side path or down the middle?

as you approach the first intersection your eyes can just barely make out flat shapes on the ground

How wide is the hall?
I hold position, and wait for the party to catch up.

the corridor is roughly 20' wide, there is currently a 5' wide path set above the water
on the "left" side
that placement good?

That looks fine

I check out the flat shapes

they appear to be bedrolls

I donāt mess with them and advise the party to do the same.
āWe are in someone elseās āhouseā. Letās not rummage through their āroomsā.
āShall we@move forwards?ā

as you get closer to the gate you notice it seems non-functional, bit of it almost seem... melted

āHmmm something seems awry.ā

Melted....

I wait for the party to catch up

We come forward and examine the gate

Is it still passable?

Itās wide open

the gate is open, but as you get close you see it leads to a 5' drop into another channel

Ah, glossed over. I too would like to examine

Well? What could melt a gate like that?
I step through the gate while they examine it but stay within 5ā of it

does it look magically done?

I'm not sure a magically melted gate would look any different than a mundanely melted gate

Well- its melted, and with no apparent cause, so lets push on

@Octavious as you step through you see the 5' drop into the channel directly in front of you. across the channel you can barely see another ledge the same height as the level you are on

im...not sure either...

Doesn't look like it was melted 15 minutes ago, so we should be ok
-ish

it is definitely not hot to the touch, whatever it was was some time ago
i.e. not today

Should be able to cross with little effort

Any boards or anything else used to cross?
Just curious... does the gate look like it was melted from my side or the other side?

Go through the gate, take a right,
so we should go right- until we see a rusty gate

Itās a grate to the right
I have my notes

so do you hop down?

This is definitely a Large metal gate.... we should go right

I step down
How wide is the channel?

channel is about 20' wide at the bottom
the channel leads both to the left and the right
(your left and right)

Right it is then, yes?

Not yet

part of the platform on the other side seems elevated - you see stairs up

Whatās forward
We go forward

solid wall

I see stairs
Up

stairs...

I go toward the stairs.
It say go through the gate, take a right, through the rusty grate,
In the notes
So go right then?

and there was aton more stuff BEFORE the steps

Or forward and right through the rusty grate?

looking at the map, M-15/N-15 are at the same level as the gate was, so 5' above you. the steps at M/N-16/17 lead up a further 10' or so, leading to the platform (M/N-18/19/20/21), which you cannot see the top of

We go right

Should we check the top of the stairs so nothing shoots us in the back first?

Nothing stopping us from doubling back if we choose incorrectly

True, except death

we have a cleric
we're set
we go right

How long will it take me to cast light on my sword?

Light is an action

Ok- let me do that then

ok, between your sword and octavious' sword the area is fairly well-lit. do you want to move?

I'll move closer to Ramza- keeping that meat shield in my way
J14 if you please

@Octavious Octavious is up - thanks to Durawinwin the creature is now well lit - it sits 5' above Ramza, and is a pretty massive semi-solid cube.

(Actually pretty convenient that the two tanks are in front of the mob lol)

I loud whisper to Ramza to āget away from the ledge thereās something up there!ā And move to L19 and grab a torch out of my bag.
The candlelight from my prestidigitation spell isnāt going to cut it

you grab your torch as you move, pulling it out and lighting it in one smooth action while moving to a more advantageous position.
as you do so you see the large cube shudder slightly and begin to move
it slides off the ledge and with a loud "plop" it lands right next to Ramza and Durawinwin
@Ramza you watch as a large pseudopod forms from the cube and swings at your face

I canāt believe the 6 hit!

Your double blow seems to take it aback a bit - more of the creature's form falls to the floor.
(edited)

It is at this point you can start to see dark objects in the cube - past meals perhaps?

"gross"

How big are the objects?

I believe its the Cube's turn

@Octavious at this point you can't really tell
and yes, it is the cube's turn

the creature, seemingly unaffected by your assault (other than dropping bits of itself left and right!) shudders and moves directly forward. @Octavious @Durawin @Gumbar In need you three to make dexterity saving throws as the creature forces itself into your spaces

the bard and cleric are not so lucky

fuuuuu

@Ramza you watch as the cube moves forward, completely surrounding your friends. it is your turn

This now takes down my ability to lay down the damage in attacks... we gotta get the cleric out!

@Durawin @Gumbar go ahead and make perception checks
while we wait for Ramza

epic perception

Your blow slices a sizeable chunk off the corner - the cube is looking substantially smaller and less perfectly-formed than it did when you first encountered it
@Durawin while inside the creature you feel a hand that is not your own - it is hard to tell, but you think it has scales....

@Gumbar you are up!

arent i stuck inside this thing?
OOOOH 1 sec
can i inflict wounds from inside it?

you are currently restrained, you cannot breathe, and you feel your skin burning as the acidic interior of the creature affects you

Glub glub GLUB!

hmmm... you cannot breathe, and Inflict Wounds has a verbal component.... I'll say you can try it, but it will be a melee spell attack with disadvantage

melee, with my normal mace attack modifier?

as you are restrained, all your attacks have disadvantage
you can try to break out if you like

right, but melee, not spell, so i use the +2 attack modifier, not the +4 from spells?

you have +4 for both
2 from STR or WIS (melee or spell), plus 2 from Proficiency bonus

i have no idea what i was looking at, so yeah, i will roll with the +4 with disadvantage

inflict wounds?

how damaged is this thing lookin?

it is looking pretty ragged
not on death's door, but not great

then yeah, level 1 inflict wounds

@Durawin you are up! you, like gumbar and the mystery person, are restrained, you cannot breathe, and you feel acid burning your skin
you can try to break out of the cube, or you can attack it from inside

what would I need to do to try to break out?

STR check
and that would be your action

Heck with it.. C'mon, Leroy, side with me.... Thunderwave, 2nd Level

oooo
CON save, right?

Yup

does it have a verbal component?

Yes

I'll give you a choice - either the cube can have advantage on its saving throw due to you being engulfed and having difficult forming the words, or you can ignore the pain (taking 1d6 acid damage) and it takes a normal save

I take the first

Cube is looking pretty hurt now, as you almost shake it apart from the inside
those outside the cube hear a very muffled crack from inside the creature

I made a toot, guys!!

@Octavious you are up! you are next to the cube, having dodged out of the way while seeing two of your allies be engulfed by it. as it is severely diminished in size you can see Ramza on the other side of the cube, almost flanking it with you.

I step adjacent to Ramza and stab into it with my short sword...

FWIW you don't have to be adjacent to an ally to get sneak attack, in case you didn't know - as long as an ally is within 5' of the creature you attack you get it

Oh well in that case I stab away from my side.

Ramza screams at the cube, swings his greatsword, and as his blade enters the creature the cube loses all form, falling to the floor.
the four of you still standing see Gumbar, his chest barely moving, Durawinwin, nearly burned beyond recognition and not moving at all, and an unfamiliar dragonborn, who is breathing but currently unconcious

Grab Durawin and drag him out... dump my water skin all over him....

Xavavor runs up to try to stabilize Gumbar, but he seems to think putting salt in your wounds is the correct thing to do....
@Gumbar make a death save please
straight d20 roll
1-9 is a failure, 10-20 is a success. 3 failures = death, 3 successes = stable. nat 1 = 2 failures, nat 20 = up with 1 hp

Dawn father be damned...

@Octavious you can make a medicine check if you want to try to stabilize Gumbar
as Bongo just failed as well

hmmm... Since I'm going to bed, you are out of combat, and there are 3-7 opportunities for medicine checks before Gumbar has a chance of actually dying, we shall say Gumbar stabilizes. The four of you sit around a few minutes, catching your breath, until @Gumbar comes back to conciousness. Right around the same time that happens, the unknown dragonborn stirs as well.....
