Here's a quick recap of what happened in the prelude:
The party began their adventure as a group of five heading to the small town of Gramsby, a mining settlement in the mountains west of the Capital. They were delivering supplies to the town, but upon arriving they discovered the mine was closed due to it being "haunted". They agreed to check it out, and discovered the mine was not, in fact, haunted, but was being protected by a Svirfneblin from the Underdark, which the miners were unknowingly approaching. The party agreed to convince the town to expand the mine in another direction, and the Svirfneblin agreed to not have his pet Umber Hulk eat them.
They returned to a thankful Gramsby, but soon delved into another interesting quest involving scores of missing pets and animals. At this point three characters left the party for reasons of their own, and were replaced by three new companions. They tracked the beasts to a large forest, where with the help of another new friend, they discovered a mad old druid had been charming the animals in a misguided attempt at freeing them. They killed the druid (and the pets...), and soon left Gramsby as "heroes".
They were given a load of freshly-mined ore as payment for their services, and soon set off towards the twin capital cities of Purethought and Shining Light with their bounty. On the way they fought a troll, and saved a large group of villagers whose town called Hythe was being destroyed by lava flows from a nearby volcano. They were told the volcano's flows had long been held by by a powerful spell of protection, but for some reason the spell had failed. This was when they first learned of a large danger to Zattar - magic was fading in the world. The party was able to save the villagers, but at the unfortunate cost of their ore, which now lay at the bottom of the bay. They decided someone in power must be informed of the spell failure, and the best place to find someone in power was where they were headed anyway - the Capital. The story begins on their boat, slowly moving towards the city.
Excellent recap!
