Yup, quickly step through

you find yourself in a small, similarly-size room. a torch burns in the far corner, and there is a ladder leading up

is the portal up behind me?

yep

And is there anything visible where the ladder ends? Person, slime, whatever?
I mage hand through the portal and make a becking motion
(edited)

it leads up to a wooden hatch
you summon your mage hand and send it through the portal
the rest of the party sees nothing

I come through right after

I think we can safely say we all pass through the portal.

I'm last

you all come through the portal and see Xavavor standing there. after a few minutes the portal vanishes

Up the ladder @Ramza?

Yeah

you climb the ladder and reach the top - the hatch/trapdoor doesn't seem locked. do you open it?

I check out the room as others are climbing

make an investigation check

@Octavious: d20+3 = (12)+3 = 15

the room is similar in size to the one you just left, but the stone is definitely different - the stone walls here are much lighter in colour. the ceiling is also made of thick, oak planks. the floor is clean - nothing in the room but the ladder and the torch

βI think we just portalβd into a basement.β
βThatβs pretty coolβ
I put out my lantern

@Ramza do you open the trapdoor?

Open 'er up!

As you open the trapdoor and finish climbing the ladder you find yourself in a well-lit large storeroom of some sort. There are many crates and barrels around you, and the walls seem to be made of polished white marble. There is a human man in robes in the far corner. As you climb into the room he turns and calmly asks βHow was your trip?β.

I really missed the sun.

He nods and says "Do you have the delivery?"

I motion to @Gumbar to procure the chest.

@Gumbar
Hopefully itβs not covered in Durawinβs excrement.

@Dungeon Master: d100 = (9) = 9

there is definitely a bit of poo on the chest

god I'm glad the d100 didn't roll 69

Gumbar makes it to the top of the ladder, brings out the chest, and hands it to Ramza

I walk over and extend it to the man

He takes it from you and asks "Any trouble down there? We haven't had a delivery in awhile"

Bringing up the rear

only lost one, so not too bad.

"Lost?"

"Took us by surprise."

speaking of...know any places around around to get a body brought back to life?

"I imagine one could go to a temple for that sort of thing" (he smirks a bit as he says this) "Ressurection is not cheap, however."
"Did you clear the route? Or did you run?"

cant say for sure its clear, but we killed everything we came across

"Unsurprisingly the creatures down there have a decidedly goop-like quality about them"

"Interesting. Well, be assured the Protectors appreciate your assistance. Both in transporting this [nods to the chest] and in clearing the sewers. This route is not used often, but life seems more pleasant when the path is clear. Please, take this for your troubles." He hands @Ramza a pouch.
"As our business is now concluded, I shall bid you farewell." He takes out a large iron key and walks to a small wooden door on the side of the room.
He unlocks the door, opens it, and gestures for you to go through.

I nod in thanks and move to go through the door before checking the contents of the pouch

the pouch contains 18 cp, 25 sp, 12 gp, and 11 pp

I avert my eyes from the person, but I look around the room as much as I can before leaving

@Kalochex make a perception check

the crates and barrels are all closed, but they seem well-made. the only other door (besides the one you are heading out of) is a large, ornate, carved oak door.
one small crate is open - the one the man was standing next to - you can just see what looks like the tops of glass vials

wonders who this person is and what his new friends have been delivering, as well as who they---he---is working for

That's a good haul, considering we were told we'd be paid when we get back. Softens the loss of Durawin a bit lol

as if we could put a price on Durawin

apparently I can - 125.68 gp

It's what he would want

LOL

Stuff off Durawin
32 Gold
45 silver
7 copper
1 dagger
1 oil lamp
Leather Armor
Long sword

So.... As the party moves out into the alley those of you not from the city notice you are definitely not in the same district you were before - the large buildings around you are ornate constructed, though of different materials. The one you just left is polished stone, the one in front of you is well-carved wood. To your left you think you see a structure made of dirt, though even that building seems well-made. There are torches in the alleyway, keeping it well-lit even at this time of night. Those of you who are from the city please make an investigation or perception check, your choice.

Shining light?

Ugh

so yep! none of you have a clue where you are

I would say we should ask around if anyone is even out here this time of night, but I'm not sure that's smart given the clandestine nature of our job and not knowing where we are. Maybe just keep moving for now? We could find an inn and ask for directions

are we even in the same town?

Bar
Bars are always a goodchoice

That works too

Yes, lots of potential converts there
uh, err....knowledgeable locals

@Ramza alley seems deserted

Let's move on out of it then

^

we head out of the alley and, hopefully, a "normal" street, where we look for a local tavern

You leave the alley and enter... another alley (though slightly larger). At this point you recognize a few buildings in the distance - you appear to be on the northern edge of The Temples.

All that work to get to a portal which blew us clear across town.

Do any of us from the city know now roundabouts where we are based off that landmark?

Yeah, just didn't want to assume/metagame

I pull out my handy tourist map. βI donβt know exactly where we are in here but based on the direction of the the towers of the citadel and some of the other land marks... it looks like weβre north of the temples area.β
Maybe one of the temples can help us with Durawin?

to clarify, you are in The Temples, on the northern edge

βSee this Street itβs just north of us... weβre IN the temples area.β

So now where?

are any temples open at this hour?

I dunno
@Ramza do you? @Gumbar do you?

I guess we could just go up to one and knock.

Now that sounds like an adventure.

Shall we?

well, we should see if there's a sign out front (or statue), kinda give us an idea.

As you wander around you notice most of the temples are indeed shut, though there are a few with open doors and torches burning outside. One has a statue of a skeletal arm holding balanced scales. Another small, nondescript structure simply has a black mask above the door.

hmm, I don't have a good idea about those.

feel free to make a religion check if you want to know if the symbols ring a bell

when the sheet says I have profiency in a skill, what's that mean?

it means you add your proficiency bonus to the skill check. D&D beyond has that in already for you. (normally you'd be -1 in religion, but you are +1 thanks to your proficiency bonus)

gotcha

@Bongo: d20 +1 = (18) +1 = 19

you recognize the skeletal hand holding scales as the symbol of Kelemvor, the "Lord of the Dead"

I say skip this one. We want Durawin back whole, not just a skeleton of him

with your roll you also know Kelemvor is also known as the Judge of the Damned, and his followers believe death is a natural part of life, and often consider anyone who has been brought back from death to be 'unnatural'

definitely skip this one. Moving on.
can I roll for the black mask place?

that roll was for both

and the second place? What do I know about that?

nothing - never seen that symbol before. all you know is it creeps you out a bit

And we're walking...we're walking....walking away

chicken!

Iβm going to follow @Bongo and @Gumbar lead on this one.

@Durawin It's your body. Want to come back fleshless? We can arrange that

Heβs not here
βHeβs dead bongo, we have to either get him his last rites or find a way to bring our sassy and fragile bard back.β
βBesides itβs creepy when you talk to dead people randomly like that.β

I'm not the religious sort so I defer to let the others lead for now.

Okay, we continue down the street looking for another temple

im not leadin shit. the kids are here for the weekend

@Bongo pretty much all the other temples you can see are closed. after all, it is ~2:30 AM

are they any I recognize as good?
make that Good
Scratch that. Let's find an inn and get some rooms.

With a dead body in tow?
Itβs just going to get worse.

Or knock on the doors anyway

Okay. With a note?

Notes... are traceable

He's in the bag of holding. He's not going to decay

Bag of holding doesnβt stop decay
Just make it rancid

okay. dump him. I need rest

Agreed.
@Ramza @Gumbar @Xavavor @Kalochex what say you?
(edited)

yeah, you need a bag of colding for him to not decay
(yes, bag of colding is an actual D&D thing)
he will totally start to stink up the bag soon

I...did not know your friend. I am sorry for your loss, but my people believe in death as an opening to rebirth. Not undeath. For as much as my opinion is worth, I say we should prepare his body for burial in accordance with his customs.

Cover him in cheap whiskey and leave him in the gutter?

I give a quizzical look, suddenly more confident that my tribes separation from the world was the right choice.

he was a bard, right? Seems fitting

Is there a bardic college?

Hmmm.. I don't know. We could check
[Bongo searches through Durawin's pockets looking for an alumni card from a local bardic college]

None.
I already went through his things.

Heβs a cheap whisky kind of guy. Perfect choice.
Anyone got any?

[Bongo checks Durawin a third time]
Funeral pyre from cheap whiskey? Would he have wanted that?

He didnβt say anything about burning... just being a drunken bard... if we could find a way to leave his body in a house of ill repute heβd be proud of all of us.

There's plenty of good brothels I'm sure, it's a city

psst- I'd be prouder if you found a REAL seedy one.. or some bigwig's daughter's bed

Guys...I got a premonition from the Spirit of Durawin. Kinda confusing, but it was something about a bigwig's bed

Hrmmmm
Breaking in and leaving a body on a nobles daughterβs bed - sounds like jail time.
Brothel?
Not so much

A rogue afraid of a little time in the clink?

(Iβm a roguish spy... not one of the unwashed thugs you may be used to.)

(Stop haunting me Durawin!)

let's see if the Temples has a public square where we can get some ideas for what to do next

granted the sun won't be up for an hour or two

. Check check taps mic

We go when our God dictates, and he's a busy man! This happens, he'll let us know when he's ready

@Kalochex as you scout ahead a bit you do see a large open area surrounded by various temples down a street to the northwest
but yes, it is still the middle of the night - the sun won't rise for at least 3 hours or so

I say we head that direction and quietly/peacefully bide our time until sunrise.

where we dumping the body?

Here?
Or Bordello?
Or Temple?

yes.

so.... are you dumping the body?

We still have it? shakes leg

if the party follow's Kalochex's advice you will enter the plaza and see several unlit temples around the edge, as well as one large one with torches burning and the doors open

dump and run at the unlit temple

drop his body in an alley. Soak it with wine. leave.

done

you find a quiet alley and dump the poor bard's body behind some crates after pouring a bottle of cheap wine on him
and walk away

It only took us a week to do it lol
On to a pub!
